Cathedral Students Head to Africa

From March 16th-April 3rd, students from CHS are on an African trip of a life time.

The Tanzanian trip is an expression of faith, where this year 20 Cathedral students will spend nearly three weeks in service to the poorest of the poor.  The students will work at Upendo Children’s Center, an orphanage run by the Precious Blood Sisters.  They will also work at St. Louis Primary School, a Diocese of Moshi English-medium primary school.  Finally, each day the students will do manual labor with a women’s group on the outskirts of Moshi.  These students will also experience a new culture including wildlife safari, a drum and dance evening, and a visit to a rural village.

This is Cathedral’s fifth trip to Africa, the first being in 2008.   89 Cathedral students and 25 chaperon's have participated in this unique opportunity.  Students learn that awareness, compassion and action can create a better world.

The students will blog about their experiences throughout their trip.  Follow their blog at http://chsafrica.blogspot.com.

Peter Marshall '00 Wins IMAX Award

The IMAX Award is given to someone who exhibits the ability to take audiences on an adventure through exploration in film making. This years winner of the award and $25,000 is Cathedral graduate Peter Marshall '00.  Peter's winning trailer for his upcoming documentary 2600 Above 60details the 2600 mile canoe expedition that he and three other CHS graduates took from the Pacific Ocean to the Hudson Bay.

Winchell Delano '03, Matt Harren '06, Steve Keaveny '00, were along side Marshall during the 130 day Trans-Territorial Canoe Expedition. The trip took them through the mountains of the Alaskan coast, across Canada's northern territories, and over the Rockies.

Marshall captured on camera a journey that was incredibly challenging and breathtakingly beautiful.  His quest was to "take audiences on an expedition into an unspoiled wilderness with a story of four friends so intrigued by unknown that fear couldn't prevent them form conquering the unimaginable on the adventure of a lifetime".

An Oppurtunity to Meet Our Foreign Exchange Students

Cathedral is grateful to be hosting five international students this school year, all of them coincidentally Spanish-speaking but from three different countries and four different regions.  Two girls are from Spain, two girls from Colombia, and one boy from Chile.  These students are eager to have a variety of different experiences while they are here in the United States.

Our Cathedral families are urged to invite one or more of the international students for something as simple as a family meal or for something as elaborate as a short family trip or vacation -- and everything in-between. We hope families will welcome these students in the same way as you might include your son's or daughter's other friends and classmates.  Our international students all live with host families but are free to consider any and all social and recreational invitations just like the U.S. kids.

Please get involved and get to know these world ambassadors.  They each enrich the Cathedral community and we are lucky to have them with us. Won't you please take a moment to get to know each of them better?  Ann Brown is our Coordinator for International Student Experiences.  She will assist you in making contact with one or more of the students, or feel free to simply have your own kids do the arranging; they're already skilled and practiced.

You can contact Ann here at school via email or phone 320-257-2317.

The Ratio Back From Audition

After a long day on Saturday, January 26th, the group "The Ratio" headed back to St. Cloud from Chicago, where they completed the first round of auditions to be on the television show America's Got Talent Season Eight

The group that consists of CHS students, Bryce Johnson 13, Chris Hornung '14, Tom Imholte '14, and Joe Weir '13, performed three times during their audition.  The third performance was for the shows executive producer.

Friends, family and fans gave the foursome bracelets to wear during the audition, so they knew that they had support from home, and many left messages of encouragement on their Facebook page.  All of which, they are grateful for.

Now, it's a waiting game.  It could be two weeks to two months before the boys hear if they will move on and have a chance to perform for celebrity judges Howard Stern, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel.

Check back for updates on their journey.
