Kathleen Anderson '85 Becomes a Published Author

Kathleen Anderson, class of '85, has published her first book, entitled Jane Austen's Guide to Thrift (Berkley Books of Penguin USA, 2013, co-authored with Susan Jones).  Using the timeless wisdom of Jane Austen and her memorable heroines, the book describes how to live a life of elegant economy and joyful generosity on a budget.

After graduating from CHS, Kathleen went on to graduate magna cum laude in English from Harvard, and then earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in English (High Distinction) from the University of Iowa.  She is currently a Professor of English at Palm Beach Atlantic University, an interdenominational Christian school in South Florida, and a writer of creative nonfiction.  Her essays have appeared in such diverse scholarly and popular publications as Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal, Sensibilities, Women's Studies, European Romantic Review, Renascence, Commonweal, Christianity Today, Teen Magazine, and Unrooted Childhoods: Memoirs of Growing Up Global.  She received the "Charles and Hazel Corts Award for Outstanding Teaching" for 2006-2007, was named the 2004 “Woman of the Year” in Communications Education by the Atlantic-Florida chapter of the Association for Women in Communication, and is a four-time finalist for Palm Beach County's ATHENA Award for supportive leadership of women.  She is currently working on two additional Austen books--a scholarly analysis of Austen's women and a novel based on Pride and Prejudice.

Kathleen would like to thank Mr. Karn for challenging her to memorize Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" ("Nevermore!"), Sister Clare for expecting proper grammar, Coaches Haws and Haws for pushing her to run through the pain, and all her Cathedral teachers and coaches for their encouragement and investment in her education.

Seniors Kelci Lewis and Amanda Siebert, junior Bailee Zumwalde, and graduated seniors Jaime Pisani andGenny Salvatore earned Scholastic All-America honors for posting a year-long cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Pisani and Salvatore tied for the best mark in the nation with perfect 4.0 GPAs for the year.
